It can happen network services to database is stored remotely. This communication is very crucial for timely execution of query. It can work properly with starting set of conditions for smaller topology. This can go badly if larger system in deployed. It can cause downtime due to timeout and system failure.

Similarly, applications developed on a LAN with similar conditions seem to operate smoothly in the lab. But once rolled out into production, all bets are off. And, as the database continues to grow, so does your downtime.
