Hackers Attack Gas Station and Stole 600 Gallons of Gas

In the sea of completely incredible news these days, one has to be singled out, simply because it generated probably the greatest gas station robbery in history. The “venue” is Detroit and the notorious amount is six hundred gallons of gas. How is it done? That may be the most interesting part.

It is highly likely that the thieves hacked the gas station, so it is not greatest because of the big money they took (only 1800 dollars), but because of their gentlemanly performance when it comes to the way of larceny, without any guns or other firearms. Not to mention the fact that they snatched 600 gallons of gas, which is enough to set an entire forest on fire. The theft lasted for about 90 minutes and happened in broad daylight, which was deliciously wicked. The police are already looking for the two suspects, but to no avail for now.

The theft occurred around 1 PM at a gas station near the downtown Detroit. The free flowing gas pump has served at least ten people, as witnesses say. Nobody knows what had happened for sure.

The well-known facts

A remote hijack device was used, and it provided the robbers with control in this situation. It has stopped the attendant from shutting off the targeted pump. The police are still in the dark when it comes to this, but the ultimate target was probably the fuel-management software. It is known to be prone to attacks, this not being the first time.

This would mean that the perpetrators would be able to manipulate the prices of fuel and snatch it. The web-based interfaces of these systems make them very sensitive to attacks. Most of them are not even password protected.

Questions and answers

There are still some issues when it comes to this robbery, the most obvious ones being what the machine is, and how is the attendant prevented from shutting the pump. Still shaken, the clerk said: “I tried to stop it but it didn’t work,” Aziz Awadh told us. “I tried to stop it here from the screen but the screen’s not working. I tried to stop it from the system; nothing working (sic).”

He added that it wasn’t until he got an emergency kit that he managed to stop the pump and alarm the police. Some people say that he should have run out, put the cones in front, together with an “out of order” sign. However, nobody can know their own immediate reaction. Another interesting story from Texas confirms that there is something irresistible about gas – a man was accused of using a device in order to steal 800-dollar fuel after hours.

In New Jersey, a BP employee evidently manipulated computer records for a very long time in order to embezzle no less than 300 000 dollars from the company. It would be exciting to know what is so appealing about gas, except for its price, it’s been very popular to steal lately.
